Biology Labs On-Line

I am co-author with Jeff Bell of Biology Labs On-Line, a collection of 12 web-based simulations for biology education. This commercial web site is marketed by the academic publisher Benjamin Cummings and jointly owned by the CSU Center for Distributed Learning and the publisher. It was developed with partial support from the National Science Foundation. Over 100,000 students around the world have purchased subscriptions to this web site. Screen images are available for a quick tour.

Virtual Courseware for Earth and Environmental Science

I am co-author with Gary Novak of Virtual Courseware for Earth and Environmental Science. Once completed, this site will contain several suites of on-line learning activities for topics such as earthquakes, global warming, biodiversity, human population growth, and groundwater. Support for this project comes from the National Science Foundation and the CSU Center for Distributed Learning.

Web Q&A and Web A&E

I am also co-author with Gary Novak of two web-based instructional tools that are being used by faculty at Cal State LA.

Web Q&A is web-based Question/Answer/Comment software that allows students to enter their answers to homework questions (or other assignments) directly on a Web page which can then be viewed by all the students in a class. Each question may be answered only once. Instructors can use a web browser to create their own Web Q&A modules, upload questions from a text file, edit the content of a module, and post comments to student answers. Instructor activities are password protected. Web Q&A gives instructors a tool for providing timely (minutes to hours) feedback about a student's writing and thinking.

Web A&E is a tool for creating and administering quizzes and surveys over the web. Quizzes and surveys can be developed and administered remotely, data is immediately captured and stored, real time data summaries are available, and it allows rapid data retrieval of stored data.
