The ASCII file JAE1.DAT contains the data used by Costantino et al. (1995) in Nature, volume 375, pages 227-230 and reported in more detail by Dennis et al. (1997) in Journal of Animal Ecology (in press). In this experiment, adult mortality was manipulated beginning at week 12. There was a control and five adult mortality treatments: mua = 0.04, 0.27, 0.50, 0.73, and 0.96. Two genetic strains were used: RR and SS. Each combination of mortality treatment and genetic strain was replicated three times. The data are arranged in a comma-delimited format, with a CR/LF at the end of each record. All entries are numeric. Each record contains the following eight fields: Field 1: Genetic strain coded as 1 = RR 2 = SS Field 2: Treatment coded as 1 = Control 2 = adult mortality rate of 0.04 3 = adult mortality rate of 0.27 4 = adult mortality rate of 0.50 5 = adult mortality rate of 0.73 6 = adult mortality rate of 0.96 Field 3: Replicate number (1-24 for each strain) Field 4: Adult mortality rate (control values were estimated from counts of dead adults) Field 5: Week at census (0, 2, 4, ..., 10, 12, 12, 14, ..., 36) (The two week 12 entries are pre- and post-treatment.) Field 6: Number of L-stage beetles Field 7: Number of P-stage beetles Field 8: Number of A-stage beetles There are a total of 960 records in the data set.
