Beetle Art

Pao Lee Her was an undergraduate student at the University of Rhode Island majoring in zoology. He created drawings of the flour beetle Tribolium as part of an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Pao's drawings fall into three broad categories: light-hearted, brightly colored sketches so children will not "be afraid" of the beetle, somewhat more serious drawings of the life-cycle, i.e., larvae, pupae and adults, and finally, cartoons that attempt to associate the biology with mathematical equations. The overall objective of the drawings is to present images of this beautiful insect to people that would not otherwise see the animal: from young children to professional mathematicians.
