S1* is the lower stable equilibrium, S2* the middle unstable equilibrium, and S3* the upper stable equilibrium. (A) Two stable equilibria are present when the predator attack rate is at an intermediate value (q = 1). (B) When the predator attack rate is low (q = 0.1), only the upper stable equilibrium S3* exists. (C) When the predator attack rate is high (q = 10), only the lower stable equilibrium S1* exists.
